mende's story is one of those rare moments in a life when, having lived ina basically comfortable 'place' over my lifetime, i was educated and humbled beyond what any news print could and imy heart is forever changed. i only wish i knew how Mende is in 2009! thank you for 'making' me grow again spiritually.

life changing

Like many other people, I watched the film before listening to this audiobook. I was so pleasantly surprised that a good portion of the book is about Mende’s childhood in the Nuba mountains. It was so incredibly fascinating, which made the latter half even sadder. I cannot understand how those people were able to treat other human beings in this way. Mende is a truly strong person, and her actions throughout her story are inspiring. I’m so grateful she shared her story for us all to read.

Wonderful performance of a tragic story

If you could sum up Slave in three words, what would they be?

engrossing sad heartwarming

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mende the girl whom the book was about I loved listening to her story it was so sad but she never gave up hope that someday she would be free again.

Have you listened to any of Adjoa Andoh’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No have,nt heard of her before.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did have a very emotional reaction to this book it made me feel very sad that human beings can treat other human beings in such a callous unfeeling way. But on the other hand some parts of the story were also quite funny and touching.

Any additional comments?

I really liked the sound of the narrators voice and the feeling she put into the telling of mendes story.
