About this listen

A Legal Thriller filled with Gripping Courtroom Drama

Every small town has a secret…

When local teenager Jason Demers is accused of assaulting his girlfriend and pushing her off a balcony, all evidence points to his guilt. But something doesn't sit right with former forensic scientist and criminal defense attorney Spencer Dunn.

It seems like an open and shut case. Multiple eyewitness accounts and a mountain of circumstantial evidence all point to Jason as the killer. But despite his reluctance, Spencer takes the case. Delving deeper into this tragic mystery, he uncovers a tangled web of lies that goes far beyond a simple assault.

As Spencer peels back the layers of deception, he quickly finds himself making powerful enemies. And every step closer to the truth brings him closer to danger. Now, it’s not just his client’s future that’s in jeopardy. Spencer’s own life hangs in the balance as well…

This is the second book in the series where the lawyer has difficult cases and personal problems to navigate through the law and local politics. His boss is his father-in-law giving him no-hope cases and he and his wife are coping with infant death. His PI dependable and capable assistant is stepping back and he takes on a case where witnesses and video footage are blaming his client. He has his own doubts about the client's innocence due to the young man's dubious decisions. Against these odds the authors (yes two are given credit) pile on more pressure and uncertainty for our small town (where everyone knows everyone else's business and firm opinions are formed) lawyer by the interference of a local crime boss. The lawyer's go-to defence of reasonable doubt has a lukewarm reception in court, especially after a key defence witness is discredited. The resolution feels just and the plot twists are credible, if concluded a little late in the story.
The narrator keeps clear who is talking and when with appropriate emotion and pacing of speech. This includes male and female characters and differentiating between them.

Not only is Spencer preparing to go to trial for Jason, he and his wife Leah are also both coming to terms with the loss of their infant child, Charlie and the challenges of adopting a young girl, Phoebe, who sadly lost her parents six months before in an RTA. Thankfully, their faithful rescue doggo, Danovo, takes on the role as her best friend and protector making the transition much easier on all of them.

This book has twists and turns all the way through and Kirkland has picked the perfect narrator to help set the scene. I’m looking forward to the rest of this series.

I really enjoyed this book when I read it on my kindle, so jumped at the chance when it came out as an audio book. So glad I did, as I enjoyed it even more with the slightest advantage of knowing what was coming. This is the second book in the Spencer Dunn series and things are changing in Spencer's home life. Normally I wish the author would stick to the investigating side of the story but I actually enjoyed the home life drama and felt it added to them as characters. While it is not necessary to have read the first book, I liked how the characters are growing and developing and found knowing the back story helped. The actual case was really entertaining, with the whole who was responsible? and would Spencer find out in time to keep his client out of jail? It was a well worked case and I enjoyed the manipulation or interpretation of the evidence. The stories don't get bogged down with lot of technical terms but I like the out manoeuvring of the witnesses on the witness stand and could picture it playing out on tv. I look forward to the next book.
After finally coming to terms with the idea of adoption and starting the process, Spencer find himself caught up in an attempted murder case. His seventeen year old client is accused of trying to kill is girlfriend. Spencer fails to get him tried as a minor and he hopes that that is his last fail in the case because if he fails again it means his clients life is over before it can begin. It could also mean problems for Spencer and his growing family, as his clients father is not some one you want to be on the wrong side of. Can Spencer keep him out of jail and more importantly prove that he isn't actually guilty? With the girlfriend struggling to stay alive and no chance of her naming her real attacker Spencer will have to find a better suspect?
I like the narrator. He is the reason I picked up series in the first place, as I have heard him read a number of books and he is always entertaining. With this author and narrator you have a winning combination.
