PETER MAY: OVER 3 MILLION COPIES SOLD

Human trafficking and inhuman terrorism - the fourth instalment in Peter May's critically acclaimed series.

SUFFOCATED

A vehicle crammed with dozens of dead Chinese immigrants is found in southern Texas. Pathologist Margaret Campbell must put aside her horror, and find out why.

SUMMONED

Detective Li Yan - an even more unwelcome memory for Campbell - has arrived stateside to investigate a link in the case to a lucrative trade in illegal labourers.

SNAKEHEAD

Li and Campbell will soon find that the crime scene hides another secret: a biological time bomb linking traffickers, politicians and migrants in Beijing, Washington and Texas - posing multiple countries one, very singular, threat.

Critic reviews

A wonderfully complex book
He is a terrific writer doing something different
From the first page I knew I was in safe hands. I knew I could trust this writer
Wonderfully compelling
A true pleasure to read
Peter May is a writer I'd follow to the ends of the earth
One of the best regarded crime series of recent years (Boyd Tonkin on the Lewis Trilogy)
Lyrical, empathetic and moving (Alex Gray)
May's novels are strong on place and the wounds left by old relationships
Will have the reader relishing every tendency of description and characterization (Barry Forshaw)
Dark, exciting and atmospheric
Powerful and authentic
A gripping page-turner that combines edge-of-the-seat suspense with a fascinating picture of modern China
The plot is chilling and ingenious
Peter May opens a window on a vision of the modern Chinese political climate ... a tremendous collision of cultures
Fast, exciting ... an entertaining read that will also give food for thought
The plot twists and turns like the tail of a Chinese dragon. A cracking good read ... Highly recommended
The characters here are vivid and contrasting, and they grow and develop in a way usually only found in literary novels, and the plotting and evocation of atmosphere as professional as they come. An excellent series
A tense and atmospheric thriller with a heart-stopping ending

Really enjoyable book and series. The twists and turns, though in places predictable, are fast paced and give the reader new philosophical and scientific avenues to explore and question within themselves. The love story lines are certainly not May's strongest areas of writing and characters are often squarely fixed into their stereotypes, but he provides a great piece of escapism for all to enjoy.

Highly enjoyable

Loved this, the 5th book in the series. Love the characters, who all sound so different because of the excellent narration. I think the research done into Chinese culture is very good - I’ve learnt so much!
And of course the story of Margaret and Lee is so exciting and frustrating at the same time. I can’t wait to listen to No 6 The Man with No Face

Excellent

Starts great, as all the China Thriller books have but I felt this story fades into little more than a killing swage and a thin story. The other books, 1-3 in the series are better i have all of them. Narrator is brilliant as ever.
