About this listen

It's December 1953. As the village prepares for the festivities, for many people, a happy Christmas is by no means certain. Recovering from a car-crash, Stella Simmons, the winter wedding that she and her sweetheart had planned seems impossible. Elsewhere in the village, Jackie Tozer is dreaming of America and Hilary Napier, who thought the war had robbed her of her chance at happiness, has to ask herself if she could ever imagine leaving her life at the big house. The darkest time of the year finds everyone asking questions with no easy answer. As snow falls softly on the village, and everyone wishes for peace and joy, Burracombe proves once again that there's always a surprise around the corner.

How I enjoyed listening to this book, wonderfully written by Lilian Harry and read so well by Anne Dover. I laughed at the things the children said during the nativity play and found the story both happy and sad in places. The way Lilian Harry describes the snowy scenery was so easy to visualise - it was lovely.

Another lovely village story

Anne did a fabulous job again of narrating. She really brings the books to life and does the accents brilliantly!

I enjoyed the journey of the story, several characters became more developed.

However, Stella is definitely a character I’ve never warmed too, she’s such a wet lettuce, I have no idea why the residents of Burracombe seem to like her so much. This story focuses on Stella rather a lot so I was disappointed about that. I think the author should have described her character much better if we were meant to feel for her.

Some of the relationships between characters such as Stella and Felix and others feel a bit unbelievable with little reasoning behind them.

I very much enjoyed the stories involving the visitors from America, it really brought an extra dimension to Burracombe, and one of the other storylines really had me rooting for one of the other characters.

Excellent narration! A good story
