About this listen

Part of Wodehouse Blandings series. When a valuable scarab belonging to an American millionaire is absent-mindedly stolen by Lord Emsworth, young writers Ashe Marson and Joan Valentine are tasked with infiltrating Blandings Castle to retrieve it. Meanwhile, vacuous Freddie Threepwood worries that some compromising letters may scupper his engagement to the millionaire's daughter. Wodehouse’s comic masterpiece combines above and below stairs pretensions with all the fun of a romantic thriller.

Loved it: Martin Jarvis is the perfect reader of Wodehouse. He brings all of the characters to life with skill.

Great fun and very entertaining.

Martin Jarvis really is wonderful reading Wodehouse, he does all the voices so brilliantly, his voice is pure golden honey. A good Blandings story with some laugh out loud moments, or rather laugh out loud quarters of an hour. loved it!! Good tonic to escape lockdown.

lovely one!

I was worried that having someone read it would spoil my picture but I needn't have worried.

Immaculately read, by the best narrator around. Beautiful sentences, superb comic set-pieces, wonderful characters. The real deal.

An early Blandings novel, with no interfering sisters, no pumpkin, no Empress, but a Freddie in crisis, and the Efficient Baxter threatening doom. It’s one of my favourites, even more so now that I have heard it being performed by Martin Jarvis.
Simply, one of the best.
