BUT
About a third of the way through the narrative becomes peppered with Americanisms which do the one thing that is a big no-no in storytelling; they break the spell. Up until this point Mrs (or Miss) Stedman does a great job of the narration in her slightly upper class but perfectly suited and wonderfully English voice.
We do not have 'malls' in Croydon, we do not have 'stores' in Hatton Garden, and we certainly don't pull on our sneakers and run down the sidewalk! The book is set in England (mostly) where we have shopping centres, shops and wear our trainers to run on the pavement. My point is this; if the whole book was written in American English then it would be fine. But it isn't, there are just random Americanisms (which then disappear again at about two-thirds through) which just sound ridiculous.
Secondly, in the climax scene one of the characters has such an unbelievably drastic change in personality it leaves one thinking 'Err, that would never happen, it's just so completely out of sync with the rest of the book.' to such a degree that an alien space craft beaming them up would be no less implausible.
It's a shame because other than these points it had the potential to be an incredible piece of work, but with them... I think you get the gist.
A great story, ruined!
