About this listen

Desperation has led Anne-Sophia Duncombe to a life of exile. Still, she is always just one mistake away from capture and a marriage she would rather die than endure. As a last resort to remain hidden from her former life, Sophia attempts a radical scheme: a life of humility and disguise. Rumor has it that Wilhelm Montegue, the Earl of Devon, is insane. A tormented war hero haunted by scandal, he is only tolerated because of his brilliant mind and swarthy good looks. His unmentionable "condition," which keeps him confined to his country home, is also the source of his talent for composing music. When a new housemaid is hired at Rougemont, Lord Devon is perplexed to find himself fascinated by her. He knows the exquisite beauty is keeping secrets but her siren's voice draws him ever closer, and he can't resist the intoxicating scent of danger surrounding her.

Critic reviews

"Song for Sophia is one of the finest historical romances I ever read. The characters were so complex, yet believable, and the writing was sharp, intelligent, and witty. Moriah has a rare talent." ---Kaki Warner

First two thirds could be edited down to good effect as it rambles, but it’s a sound story with decent characters and the last third picks up. Placement in time is secondary in this story to the emotional / character development, and the Crimean War mentions helped set a background scene, but the zipper stuff had me bamboozled. Whilst there was a patent of sorts in 1851, there was no public availability until a second patent in 1893 and even then these early versions didn’t work very well and were on footwear. It took the 1913 patent to do the trick, so mention of it in this earlier setting is a bit odd and it does not add anything to the tale. I get that this is a novel, but a bit of historical adherence really helps in immersing the reader in the time. Narration was fine at 1.15 speed. Overall, a 3.5 if that could exist, I think.

Good not great

A lovely romance, possibly a little thin on historic detail, but quite a compulsive listen, and no discernible padding, a light touch, and well read.

Very enjoyable

Started great but at some point the casual murder, I couldn't really justify that plus it kind of went on and on. It wasn't so bad but I didn't enjoy it that much

A bit tedious
