About this listen
New York Times bestselling author Kevin J. Anderson triumphantly returns to epic fantasy with the Wake the Dragon series. Spine of the Dragon is a politically charged adventure of swords, sorcery, venegance, and the rise of sleeping giants.
Two continents at war, the Three Kingdoms and Ishara, are divided by past bloodshed. When an outside threat arises—the reawakening of a powerful ancient race that wants to remake the world—the two warring nations must somehow set aside generational hatreds and form an alliance to fight their true enemy.

Critic reviews
“A must-read for any fantasy fan, brilliant and fabulous! One of the greatest talents writing today, Kevin J. Anderson is a master of adventures that are filled with dynamic, unforgettable characters.” —Sherrilyn Kenyon
“A fast-paced, enjoyable read. Concise description is paired with immediate action that plunges the reader irrevocably into a world teetering on the brink of a conflagration.” —Robin Hobb
"Just what fantasy readers lust after—a complex and intricately detailed universe descending into a war. The details of this exotic world are exquisite. The sprawling cast of characters and creatures is fascinating. The action is terrifying. Let the mayhem begin.” —Terry Goodkind
The ending has left me gripping for more. It might seem predictable to have a fantasy book about Intractable hatreds distracting the factions from a returned ancient threat, but I promise you: the Wreths are nothing like the Others/White walkers, and the schemers and their agendas are far more high fantasy than than anything in aSoIaF.
Lots of decent characters doing the right thing but being hampered by those with their own self interest. I’d say you had a good feel and taste for the characters about halfway through. I especially like Kollonan and was so sure he was going to die when he first encountered the Frost Wreths.
There are moments in the story where it feels momentarily predictable by those are moments of excitement. It’s not “here we go again.” It’s “aha! A revenge plot! I love those!”
The voice actor.
He made the action/catastrophe scenes really come alive. I’ll give him credit for that, and Klovus reminded me off Varys from A Game of Thrones.
He’s an American who has chosen to narrate in a fake high class southern English accent for the entirely. I don’t know why he chose to do that. Lasis and Thonn are the only two American accented characters and for me as a Brit they were the least grating because you could always tell what he was going for.
His Fulcor soldiers would switch from southern to northern accents mid sentence and it was quite annoying.
Three young girl characters all had the exact same voice and they sounded like aliens. They expressed basically emotions because all his energy was spent on making them sound high pitched.
And the Utuak characters. I couldn’t tell if they were supposed to be Scottish or Russian. Hopefully it was just an accent he’d made up.
What he lacks in accent skills, he made up for in power and enthusiasm though.
Superbly gripping story.

Four hours in, I had to stop. The narration accents were so shockingly awful it was upsetting, I actually shouted at it!
Dick Van Dyke was better in Mary Poppins, and that joke has been earning comedians good money for half a century!.
So it was time for this accent abused listener to give up. Four hours I won't ever get back.
Please Amazon, Audible or whoever does these things, remember there are British people listening. It really is offensive to have our badly perceived, national accents liquidised (Yes, it's got an "s"!) into multinational mush.
Had it been simply read in the Narrator's own, quite pleasing voice, without the accents and quite absurd crescendoes, it might have been a different story...
How do I get my money back?
Potential, maybe... by awful narration.
