I thought a young lady asking for cream in her tea something I could ignore. A fairly common mistake by American writers.
But basing the main story on an impossible event?
A sixteen year old could inherit his father's title but not take control of the estate and certainly not become the guardian of his five or six year old sister. It just wasn't legal.
Without any relatives the courts would step in to appoint a guardian.
A major error that undermined the reason for the character and behaviour of two key people.
