About this listen

Since discovering his ability to see magical auras, Gideon has embraced his new role as an auramancer working for the Conclave. When five people in Millhaven mysteriously die without a cause, Dacey Menet – the bennu shifter who burst into his life in a blaze of fire – needs his unique talents.

As they investigate the deaths, Gideon discovers void-like magical signatures where life force once existed. Something is draining people's souls, and the victims seem unconnected – a tattoo artist, a nurse, a homeless man, and members of the town's elite.

When Dacey becomes the next target, Gideon must solve the mystery before the woman he's falling for becomes nothing but an empty shell. As Fourth of July celebrations light up the town, Gideon must uncover who – or what – is stealing souls before Dacey's eternal flame is extinguished forever.

Gwen DeMarco’s writing is quickly becoming an addiction of mine and Janine Granda’s voice is bringing everything to life in my mind’s eye beautifully.

After devouring the Sophie Feegle boxset in a matter of days, discovering the first Auras and Embers book afterwards and devouring that in one day. A pattern is emerging, as I did exactly the same with Spirit Marked.

I adore this world that DeMarco has created. The use of mythologies, fairy tales, folklore etc. is sublime throughout all of the mythical books. The delectable descriptive prowess allows me to walk freely within this world - I swear, sometimes I feel as though I can even taste the food!

The characters DeMarco weaves are simply wonderful. The settings are magnificent, as they typically are inspired by real places - they create this gorgeous grounding for the fantastical elements that enables the mythical to feel as though it is steeped in reality.

Janine Granda is, yet again, the perfect choice for this world. Her voice quickly transports your mind to where it needs to be. Pacing is always brilliant, use of emotion/tone perfectly balanced - her voice is the perfect guide through, never detracts or distracts from the tale.

And now, to turn into Oliver Twist for a moment: please, may I have some more? I am craving more instalments of this series, I would love to journey further with Gideon and Dacey. I, honestly, would love any story set within this majestic mythical world you have created.

A second really good story in the Auras and Embers series from Gwen Demarco. Once again we catch up with Auramansa Gideon and the fiery Dacey as they team up to try and solve the mystery of the murders of a number of people. Twists and turns abound before they finally find the connection and unveil the conspiracy behind the killings. Edge of the seat listening once again. Janine Granda does a superb job of the narration and brings the drama to your ears. Highly Recommended.
I was kindly given a copy of the book by the author and leave this honest review voluntarily.
