About this listen

St. Bridget of Sweden (1303 - 1373) was a mystic and saint, and founder of the Bridgettines nuns and monks after the death of her husband Ulf. She is famous for her saintly life, the many miracles she worked, and her influence on various popes and European leaders. She is also well-known for the revelations she received, which are composed in eight books. St. Bridget is one of the six patron saints of Europe. This biography details her life, drawing from the many accounts that have been written about her. It also gives a historical background to help make sense of the events this remarkable saint was involved in.

This was published in 1909 so the vituperative anti-Protestant slant would have been more acceptable then than it is now. Bridget is generally reckoned to have been one of the least attractive saints, and there is nothing in this book to make me reconsider. What surprises me is the very unequal quality of production from Patristics Publications: this reader carries the odour of sanctity to extremes and I staggered to the end of the book only because there is nothing better available. This is very important work and a dedicated outfit like Patristic needs to research more and find readers who can carry the text without my having to reach for a bucket!
