Surprisingly, this is the first full-length biography of the legendary comic who was the creative half of the universally loved duo Laurel and Hardy. Based upon scores of interviews with family and friends (including the intimate diaries of Virginia Ruth Laurel, whom Stan married three times), Stan tells the very human story of Laurel’s struggle to survive against difficult odds, personal and professional.

From precarious beginnings in vaudeville with Charlie Chaplin, skinny Stan changed his name and rose to enjoy success and universal acclaim with his big-bellied partner Oliver Hardy. Yet, beneath the exterior of the wistful comic whose sense of humor gave pleasure to so many millions was a man beset by financial worries, alcohol, and unhappy personal relationships that encompassed many dalliances and six marriages.

This superb biography provides new insight into the supremely talented man behind the screen image and a fascinating panorama of show business in the first half of this century.

I wanted to know about Stan Laurel’s life. This covers that. However, there is limited info about the relationship between him and Oliver Hardy. Throughout the story it would cut between timelines and stories about other actors which were interesting but should have been mentioned separately as this altered the flow of SL’s story.
Basically, actors have always been very selfish people and the price they pay for fame is a real life.

It's a bit rushed it feels that way. At times like it wants stans life out the way so it can go in to someone else's biography for ten minutes then it returns to stan laurel. but did we need to know the life story of this other person do we need to know when they died? No we didn't but we're given there biographies how met him one day but some people who worked with stan laurel for years "that Scottish guy fin worked with him for years" that's all they get? I would of liked to of heard more on fin then a woman stan worked with once who mysteriously died. Like there trying to point a finger that Stan Laurel did it. That just comes out of nowhere and did we need to know that? No

It's an OK biography
