About this listen

This intimate portrait by his former personal assistant and confidante reveals the man behind the legendary filmmaker - for the first time.

Stanley Kubrick, the director of a string of timeless movies from Lolita and Dr. Strangelove to A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Full Metal Jacket, and others, has always been depicted by the media as the Howard Hughes of filmmakers, a weird artist obsessed with his work and privacy to the point of madness. But who was he really? Emilio D'Alessandro lets us see. A former Formula Ford driver who was a minicab chauffeur in London during the Swinging Sixties, he took a job driving a giant phallus through the city that became his introduction to the director. Honest, reliable, and ready to take on any task, Emilio found his way into Kubrick's neurotic, obsessive heart. He became his personal assistant, his right-hand man and confidant, working for him from A Clockwork Orange until Kubrick's death in 1999.

Emilio was the silent guy in the room when the script for The Shining was discussed. He still has the coat Jack Nicholson used in the movie. He was an extra on the set of Eyes Wide Shut, Kubrick's last movie. He knew all the actors and producers Kubrick worked with; he observed firsthand Kubrick's working methods, down to the smallest detail. Making no claim of expertise in cinematography, but with plenty of anecdotes, he offers a completely fresh perspective on the artist and a warm, affecting portrait of a generous, kind, caring man who was a perfectionist in work and life.

This was a compelling story, and an incredible insight into this amazing man. It was like being behind the scenes on some great movies, and I really felt emotional at various stages. Highly recommended.

Brilliant Memoir

Stanley Kubrick is one of my favourite directors and I love most of his work. This book is unique, it gives a unique lens of his 'man Friday', on who the man was, his love of films, family and his animals. It is easy to see how devoted to Kubrick Emilio was, and gives a great tour of his personal life, but does provide little insight on his craft or how he changed as a director over the 30 years of his career. The audio performance is brilliant.

Almost a Hagiography, yet very good

Emilio D’Alessandro is scraping by as a minicab driver when he gets a call asking him to work for a mysterious film company. It turns out that his new boss is movie director Stanley Kubrick. At the start of the 1970s, he’s about to embark on an extraordinary series of films that will seal his legacy as one of the industry’s titans, from A Clockwork Orange to The Shining. Former racing driver Emilio quickly becomes not just a chauffeur but also a kind of PA, and in fact dogsbody, working for paranoid, secretive workaholic Kubrick, who has a reputation as a fearsome tyrant - unmerited, Emilio believes. And we do see a compassionate side of Kubrick, from Emilio’s ringside seat. A bond develops between the two men. Emilio starts as an employee then describes himself as a ‘factotum’. By the end, he’s ‘one of Stanley’s children’. For a lot of the book, Emilio worries about the impact of his near-24/7 devotion to Kubrick on his own family. He’s exhausted — but ultra-loyal. We get great insights into how Kubrick worked, and how he was perceived by movie stars and fellow directors. Kubrick is obsessive about animal welfare, entrusting Emilio with care of his cats. Kubrick insists his pets eat from porcelain. He’s somewhere beyond eccentric … Emilio doesn’t watch Kubrick’s films; perhaps this detachment - or indifference - is what attracts Kubrick to him, along with his work ethic. Emilio is exploited - there’s no doubt of it. But by the end you start to wonder if the relationship was closer to interdependence. Emilio wants to escape Kubrick and his manic intensity — but seems at a loss when he makes the break. Kubrick can’t let him go. We learn that Kubrick has what we’d now call ‘trust issues’ - in a big way. Kubrick trusted Emilio, but virtually no one else. It’s a secretive empire — and Emilio is the gatekeeper. This is a highly listenable book, and an essential listen for Kubrick fans, and indeed all movie fans. Ultimately, it’s the story of a remarkable relationship, even if it’s tricky to define. A friendship - or the ruthless exploitation of a servant who gave up a large chunk of his life for a boss who always put his own needs first? Without the help of Emilio and other Kubrick loyalists, would those amazing films have been made? Maybe … but it would’ve been a much tougher process for Kubrick, a man who lived to work, and - it seems - little else. The narration is a little robotic at times - there isn’t much in the way of modulation of tone - but it is clear, and broadly works well. I speeded it up to around 1.4, and then 1.6 towards the end, and enjoyed it more.

Factotum, disciple, or slave?
