About this listen

Long before the Clone Wars, the Empire, or the First Order, the Jedi lit the way for the galaxy in a golden age known as the High Republic!Vernestra Rwoh is a new Jedi Knight at age sixteen, but her first real assignment feels an awful lot like babysitting. She's been charged with supervising twelve-year old aspiring inventor Avon Starros on a cruiser headed to the dedication of a wondrous new space station called Starlight Beacon. But soon into their journey, bombs go off aboard the cruiser. While the adult Jedi try to save the ship, Vernestra, Avon, Avon's droid J-6, a Jedi Padawan, and an ambassador's son make it to an escape shuttle, but communications are out and supplies are low. They decide to land on a nearby moon, which offers shelter but not much more. And unbeknownst to them, danger lurks in the forest….Rich internal third-person dialogue reveals dollops of inner turmoil for each character at key moments as well as providing some much-needed world-building to make this a winning choice. A great read for Star Wars fans young and old." -- Kirkus Reviews Literature & Fiction Movie, TV & Video Game Tie-Ins Science Fiction & Fantasy Kids Science Fiction Action Adventure

Another 'High Republic' short story and it has to be said one of the better ones. Gripping story with interesting characters I didnt mind investing time to get to know. Interesting concept story arc. Really enjoyed the narration, which I felt lended itself perfectly to this particular story. My only grip is that it wasnt much, much longer, but I am pleased the characters will appear again further down the line. Great Read

A Great Read

Seeing a lot of complaints about lack of production effort. Not sure if there was an accidental early release without, but what you can download as of March 2023 definitely has background sound effects and music. Not necessarily used optimally. There's a few places where, let's say, the "dark side music" would have fitted really well and it just wasn't employed. But don't skip this one because you thought it was the narrator in a soundproof booth, because it is not. Glad I gave it a chance.

Suggestions that the narrator fails to give unique voices to the characters are fair. She doesn't display the widest vocal range, and there are times when it is hard to tell that dialogue has switched from one to the other, so that could be improved a little. There are also mispronunciations and failures to identify appropriate intonations for certain races.

The story itself is simple, but sometimes that's what the listener wants? Not everything has to be a galaxy-changing crisis, and this isn't. This is a few youngsters stuck in a bad spot, making the best of it. For the most part, they are likeable characters, and it's kind of refreshing to have a close spotlight on a (relatively) small problem. Biggest complaint is that this story is very short and thus feels a bit meagre vs the 10-11 hours of some of the other High Republic audiobooks.

Does have sound effects and music...

I really appreciate the subject of emotions and choosing the light. I find this story very inspiring and it contains some of my favorite aspects of Star Wars.

A very personal story with great characters

It's worth listening to just to find out what happened to a couple of people from previous books in the High Republic series. However, it's pretty average. Young people get stranded on a hostile planet.

Ok. Slow start.
