Having read the first in the series allowed me a little jump start in understanding some things about this book. The stories are stand alone, so you don’t *have* to read the first, but it takes the author a long time to explain things like why the Galactics look down on the Humans. But never mind, the story is great and it even includes some poetry. Bonus!

The narrator was so incredibly slow that I was able to boost the speed to 1.6x original speed.

Narrator did ever such a good job handling different voices, and Brin's tendency to focus on a story to one side of the Earth-shattering discovery always amuses.
