About this listen

A TOP 5 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

“Perceptive analysis (and) also a fundamentally human story... this superb book rues Adamson's absence while celebrating his music’s still audibly beating heart.” 5/5 MOJO

The official biography of former Big Country frontman chronicling his career highs and tragic death.

This is the story of Stuart Adamson, co-founder of not one but two seminal Scottish post-punk groups, The Skids and Big Country. But this is a book that is about much more than music.

Stay Alive is about alcoholism, abuse, family, fame, addiction, depression and working-class pride. And along the way there are stories of drug busts, debauchery, flag burning, fist-fights, prison escapes and riots, with a revolving cast of characters from The Clash to the Rolling Stones.

For the first time, both of Stuart Adamson’s wives, children and bandmates tell their side of the story: unflinching, funny and brutally honest.

This seems to be a well researched document of the life and works of Stuart Adamson. Told chronologically, it takes the listener through his life and career with insights from friends and family. The highs of success are told alongside the challenges he had with alcohol. It’s been done with sensitivity but doesn’t hide his health issues and the impact on those around him. The narration by Mark Bonnar is excellent.

I bought this book only knowing a few ‘Big Country’ songs and not even knowing what had ultimately happened to Stuart Adamson.

After finishing ‘A Perfect Silence’ a book about Talk Talk’s Mark Hollis I was after another musicians biography and this jumped out at me and I am glad it did.

Stuarts career seems to have run in a similar vain to Hollis’s. Whilst Mark managed to simply walk away, Stuart wasn’t able to and ultimately paid the price.

The story is well written and it was positive for a change to see that the family & friends were fully cooperative with the author.

I am glad they got a Scottish actor to narrate as it definitely sets the correct tone.
