Summary

Trouble is brewing for the Hoggetts and their friend Chief Inspector Macdonald in Lunesdale, deep in the Lancashire fell country. By the jagged cliffs and chilling depths of a secluded quarry pool, strange noises disturb the night, and after an architect surveying the area is nearly hoisted into the cold waters by an unseen assailant, suspicions of a cold current of crime running through the area become a matter for the police.

I normally enjoy the MacDonald novels, but this one was too much setting and not enough storyline for me. As a northerner myself I think northern landscapes are undervalued but the descriptions can go on for too long.

The storyline was much less convoluted than usual and even more rambling than usual.

Personally, I dislike the narrator’s style with overemphasis and odd pronunciations and just too much stress put into even the most mundane scenes, such as boiling warmer for tea, but I guess this is a personal preference.

Another great Lorac story, but I found it difficult to get past the narrator’s style. He’s spoilt other stories for me before. But as the story was so good, I had to endure his histrionic and stentorian style in order to find out what happens. Next time, I’ll buy a print copy if the only choice is his narration.

This is the third volume of Lorac’s Lunesdale novels. So all are now available as audiobooks. (It should be subtitled “A Lancashire Mystery “ like all the others rather than “A Lake District mystery “). It’s an enjoyable story with a fairy predictable ending. It’s well read apart from Kate Hoggett sounding like Kenneth Williams. 🙄
