About this listen

A new civil war has begun: with the emperor Pertinax's murder Marcus and his protector Scaurus have escaped Rome, seeking sanctuary for their familia in the East.

But they are soon pressed back into service by Septimius Severus, the ruthless commander who has seized the imperial capital and who holds the military balance of power over his two rivals.

Niger, the would-be emperor in the East is on the march with six legions, and Scaurus's legion is ordered to Thrace as a sacrificial advance guard, tasked with delaying them. Whatever the cost....

Another book in the Empire series, set in the late 2nd century AD. I am a fan of Anthony Riches and have followed Marcus Aquila and friends all over the Roman Empire. The cast of characters that the author has built up has changed little over time and so it was sad to see 2 well liked characters meet their ends. The book is well crafted as ever and sends you searching your history books to find out more of many of the real people that are woven into the story..

A Really enjoyable addition to the Empire Series

loved this addition and even more excited to hear there will be more! I would be lost without Empire!

Great to hear all the characters back

At a rough guess I would say I have listened to 150 hours of this series and thoroughly enjoyed every minute as have adventure from Hadrians Wall to Rome and Egypt. Saul Reichlin undoubtedly turns this great series into a superb one. Each voice individual throughout the 13 books, the places correctly pronounced (not so in the 14th book) and the scenes realistic to the point of partaking in the battles and gladiator scenes.
Unfortunately, this is the end for me. I purchased, tried and returned the last in the series. I just couldn't get I with the new narrator who didn't attempt to copy any of the voices we all knew so well and frankly mispronounced several common words in the first 10 minutes. As I now know, Saul died in 2024, so I/we will no longer be entertained by, possibly, the greatest audio book narrator of the past 20 years. Return to the days of your youth Saul and live long in the sun.

The last in an outstanding series (for me)
