Summary
Manchester is a strange city.
Throughout its long history there have been countless tales of the weird and the wonderful within its boundaries.
Strange Manchester features a selection of ghost stories from across the whole of Greater Manchester. There phantom nightclub owners, cursed skulls, and a ghost that somehow found itself in Manchester despite having died in Chester. There's also a haunted police station and tales of ghost trains and buses too. There's even a mummy!
The book also covers a few of the regions mysterious UFO encounters including a look into the Manchester Airport Near Miss, which saw a passenger airliner come within meters of a UFO, as well as an alleged alien abduction that happened in 1979 in Stockport on the banks of the River Mersey.
In addition the the tales of the weird, the book is also packed full of historical factoids, meaning it also serves as something of a potted history of Greater Manchester.

Strange Manchester: Ghost Stories, UFO Encounters, Big Cat Sightings, and More from Across Greater Manchester is a thrilling journey through the supernatural underbelly of one of England’s most iconic cities. Adrian Finney has done a fantastic job compiling an eclectic mix of stories that capture Manchester's strange and shadowed history, making this audiobook an absolute must-listen for paranormal enthusiasts and local history buffs alike.
Narrator Peter McGiffen brings each story to life with a voice that’s both rich and atmospheric, enhancing the suspense and eerie charm that define Finney's tales. He masterfully navigates between mysterious ghosts, mischievous spirits, UFO sightings, and, of course, the notorious big black cats said to lurk on the city’s outskirts. Each encounter feels palpably real, as if you’re not just listening, but actually standing amid these bizarre scenes, feeling the chill in the air.
What I especially enjoyed was the diversity of the stories—there’s something for everyone, whether you're intrigued by ghostly encounters, captivated by extraterrestrial phenomena, or simply curious about local legends. Each tale is grounded in Manchester’s rich heritage, weaving together fact and folklore in a way that makes you feel like you’re exploring a secret part of the city. McGiffen’s narration adds the perfect balance of suspense, capturing the eeriness without overshadowing Finney’s subtle humour and humanity woven throughout.
By the end, Strange Manchester leaves you glancing over your shoulder and questioning reality just a little more than before. It's not only a fantastic exploration of Manchester's mysterious side but also a beautifully narrated homage to an area of the UK brimming with the supernatural.
Five stars for an unforgettable, immersive listen—this one is bound to linger long after the final tale.
A deep dive into Manchester's dark side!
