Summary

Here are overlooked or forgotten tales from the world's greatest conflict. These are stories of courage, daring, and stupidity, some of which would challenge the imaginations of Hollywood scriptwriters.

Some of the many true tales that author Donald Aines recounts include:

  • He would never be cast as a dashing war hero, but a cast member of The Addams Family television show volunteered for one of the most dangerous jobs the Army Air Force had to offer.
  • The US Navy's deadliest submarine claimed an unexpected victim with its last torpedo, and led to one of the war's most harrowing tales of survival.
  • Bob Hoover's escape from a German stalag would have made a great movie.
  • British commando "Mad Jack" Churchill earned his nickname, arming himself to fight a twentieth century war with a 15th-century attitude and weapons.

In Strange and Obscure Stories of World War II, the reality of war trumps fiction.

Such a shame America didn’t come in in 1939. It would have saved the lives of so many of the allied forces and hostilities would have been over by Christmas.
Not one mention that the uk had a policy of disarmament over their heads, that they and the rest of the the allies fought with what they had rather than the newer arms later sold to us by America and for which we were still paying until 2006. Not that we weren’t grateful for the loan , we were , it was a happy thought that while Europe was suffering severe food shortages and continual bombing there would be something to fight with when our meagre supplies were exhausted.
Small footnote, never slight the spitfire or hurricane.

Only read if you are from the USA.
