Middle-aged, jaded and divorced, TV scriptwriter Harada returns one night to the dilapidated downtown district of Tokyo where he grew up. There, at the theatre, he meets a likable man who looks exactly like his long-dead father. And so begins Harada's ordeal, as he's thrust into a reality where his parents appear to be alive at the exact age they had been when they had died so many years before.

This book was unusually sad for me & very deep, having lost my parents very young It helped me imagine seeing them & being with them again. I had thought Kaye may have been saved at the parents accident & May have been his sister with the burns on her. It was very thought provoking &such a different kind of story. I was so sad when he had to say bye to his parents again. A really really interesting read. Thank You.

I enjoyed this very different book

Knowing that the film, All Of Us Strangers, starring the stunningly good actor, Andrew Scott, had been adapted from this book, I felt compelled to read the original. Other reviews have sufficiently covered the basic story: a Japanese ghost tale in which the main protagonist is reunited with the parents lost to him when he was only a boy at the same time as he begins a love affair with a tenant in the same apartment block as himself. Both book and film are beautiful although the film is more hauntingly so, and sad rather than supernatural, definitely improving the more stark outlines of the story.

A quick and easy read, nicely performed by Geoff Sujiyama and worth looking at especially if the reader veers towards a touch of horror. But a full throttle recommendation for the film

"Everybody has illusions."

When I came across this book I wasn't sure, but I really enjoyed listening to it. It's unusual and interesting, well written.

Unusual and enjoyed!

The measured build up, and the un-showiness of style made the overall impact of the story unexpectedly powerful.

The reality of detail.
