About this listen

A Steamy Small-Town Romance with a Grumpy Cowboy, Found Family, and Heartbreak

"She’s a firestorm in scrubs, and I’m about to get burned."

Ozzy
Taking a job as a private nurse on a family ranch in Virginia was supposed to be a temporary fix—a way to disappear, lay low, and keep my past where it belongs. My patient? A grumpy old man with one foot in the grave and a foul mouth to match my own. Easy enough. His family? A whole different story. Jackson Rowe is a problem I don’t need. A rugged cowboy with a sharp stare, a sharper tongue, and a body carved by hard work and bad decisions. He’s watching me too closely, peeling back my layers with nothing but silence and those storm-cloud eyes. He wants to know my secrets. But trust isn’t something I give, and getting close to me comes with consequences.

Jackson
My father is dying, and my family is barely holding it together. The last thing we need is a sarcastic, guarded-as-hell nurse stirring up trouble. But Ozzy Davenport isn’t just trouble—she’s a goddamn hurricane in eight inch heels. She pushes, I push back, and somehow, that friction turns into something neither of us saw coming. She acts like she’s untouchable, like she’s already halfway out the door. But I see her. I see the fight in her, the fire. And I know one thing for sure—whatever she’s running from is catching up. And this time, I won’t let her run alone.

Don't go into this thinking there is much action and adventure. It is a raw romance, with love and despair and heartbreak. A great read. I did feel I was waiting for something to happen, but all around great read.

Really good read

This book ( my first D J Krimmer book, and about to spend all my money reading everything from this author) Jackson and Ozzy are so incredible, so beautiful. Sean Masters is absolutely god like as always and Maxine Mitchel is incredible as one of the best written FMCs I’ve come across if not the best. The trauma is heartbreaking the mending is beautiful. The family involved will also bring you to tears, the animals as well. This was an unexpected beautiful book that just went instantly in to my top 3 ever! I am left with a feeling of sadness that if everyone had a Jackson the world would be infinitely better. You will not regret this purchase. It was incredible. Enjoy X

This is a spin off from Hel’s ink series more exactly from fourth book Derek, as the MMC is Derek’s brother, Jackson. This is my first cowboy dark romance and boy, oh boy did DJ Krimmer deliver.
This book is probably her darkest book so far, for this reason please read you TW. The FMC of this story is Ozzy, she is a sassy, badassy nurse with a baggage of very dark trauma and PTSD. Preformed by Maxine Mitchell, who went above and beyond. She brought all Ozzy’s emotions and vulnerabilities to light in a perfect cadence and deliverance. Maxine has a honey voice that will draw you in and make everything sound so sexy when it needs to be.
Jackson, our MMC, he is a rancher, broody, angry, and grumpy. Sean Master delivered a finger licking goooooood performance. The tenderness that Sean has given us for Jackson is one of a kind and I believe he fit like a glove. This man not only helps Ozzy heal, but blossom into an even more beautiful persona.
The chemistry between the characters is tangible and the voices just make it even more so. Their relationship is from an employer/ employee to the most protective, comforting teddy bear.
There is one particular character that touched my heart and I thought would touch yours too which is Derek and Jackson’s dad. The banter and fun him and Ozzy have is unmatched.

Another masterpiece of dark emotional romance

I received the ALC of Stray from Blue Nose Audio and decided to try an immersive read by listening as I followed along in the book. It turned out to be one of the best choices I have made as a reviewer because the audio brought every part of this story to life in the most powerful way.

DJ Krimmer writes with a mix of heartbreak humour and love that always feels honest. Stray is emotional and heavy in all the right places yet still filled with warmth and banter. Experiencing that through audio only made the impact stronger. This was a story that settled into my chest and stayed there.

Ozzy was an incredible main character. She carries an extraordinary amount of trauma yet she is a survivor with so much strength and vulnerability woven through her voice. Jackson was the perfect counterbalance to her and I loved watching him figure out how to love her with patience and care. Their connection felt real and earned and the audio performances made every moment between them even more affecting.

The Rowe family added so much heart and charm. I connected to all the side characters but the relationship between Morris and Ozzy stood out for me. It added a quiet tenderness that made the emotional beats even more meaningful.

Sean Masters and Maxine Mitchell were outstanding in this production. Their performances carried the humour the grief and the healing with such authenticity that I found myself laughing out loud one minute and crying the next. Their delivery elevated the entire experience and made the story feel even more immersive.

As an ALC this was exceptional. The production quality the performances and the emotional depth made this an unforgettable listen. I absolutely loved it.
