About this listen
Luther meets The Wire. This is the first Detective Harry Virdee audiobook.
The sky over Bradford is heavy with foreboding. It always is. But this morning it has reason to be - this morning a body has been found. And it's not just any body.
Detective Harry Virdee should be at home with his wife. Impending fatherhood should be all he can think about, but he's been suspended from work just as the biggest case of the year lands on what would have been his desk. He can't keep himself away. Determined to restore his reputation, Harry is obliged to take to the shadows in search of notorious ex-convict and prime suspect Lucas Dwight.
But as the motivations of the murder threaten to tip an already unstable city into riotous anarchy, Harry finds his preconceptions turned on their head, and he discovers what it's like to be on the other side of the law....
©2016 A. A. Dhand (P)2016 Audible, LtdIf you could sum up Streets of Darkness in three words, what would they be?
dark, broken, humanWhat did you like best about this story?
Interestingly, the thing that I liked most by the end of this audible was the thing that I liked least at the start; the narrators distinct accent. The use of an authentic regional accent was very difficult to tune in to but I am pleased I persevered as it added gravitas and a completely refreshing layer to the story.Which character – as performed by Muzz Khan – was your favourite?
The narrator brought a warmth a depth to all the main Asian characters. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. It raises some very complex social issues that deserve reflection.Any additional comments?
A great first encounter - I look forward to to the next.dark but very beautiful

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend to crime fiction addicts like myself.Would you be willing to try another book from A. A. Dhand? Why or why not?
I'll probably get Girl Zero, yes.Did Muzz Khan do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
Muzz Khan does a brilliant job with the Asian dialogue, differentiating the characters well, but some parts of the narrative are difficult to follow. I'm not from Bradford. Was Streets of Darkness worth the listening time?
Yes, definitely a good listen.Any additional comments?
There are a couple of plot developments that rely on coincidence, that I feel could have been written better. To point them out would be too much of a spoiler. I always reckon that coincidences are more common in life than in crime thrillers, in which one should be enough. However, these are minor issues in an otherwise good listen.Interesting variation on troubled cop with past

Streets of Darkness is a real rollercoaster ride with enought twists to make you dizzy. It is well writted, the plot is strong and fast paced with lots of violence, and when I'd finished I wanted more!
What a character Harry Virdee is. He's a British born Sikh married to Saima, a muslim, and both have been ostracised by their families. I loved the bond that they had as a couple. Currently suspended from work, he's a real maverick who breaks every rule in the book. The rest of the characters and diverse and interesting.
This is one of my favourite listens so far this year, and I'm going straight on to listen to Book 2. I can't get enough of Harry!
I have seen much criticism of the narrator, Muzz Khan, but I enjoyed his narration. I felt his voice was authentic for the book. My only criticism is that he spoke quite slowly so I had to speed up the narration, but then it was perfect.
Brilliant start to a series!
