Oh God, said a close friend when he saw me listening to this book, "yet another reference list to enhance your life". True that. But unlike many other books that give us all guidance for how to live our lives, Dr. Peterson backs his "rules" with research and logic. But above all, Dr. Peterson's main lesson here - your behavior and attitude play a monumental role in how good your life will be - with a huge focus on self-responsibility for our own well being and happiness. Taking this one step further, if we all took more responsibility for our own behavior and attitude then the world would be a much better place.

He also sounds a clarion call for us to notice how the unchallenged forces of chaos can lead to the horrific realities of Nazi Germany and Stalin's Gulag.

Don't let children do things that make you dislike them. You aren't as nice as you think, and you will unconsciously take revenge on them. You are massively more powerful than your children and have the ability and subconscious proclivity for tyranny deeply rooted within you.

12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos is more affordable for sure, but only slightly more accessible. Part self-help book, part memoir, part Maps for the masses, it’s organized sprawlingly. Rule 2 (Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping), for example, opens with a discussion of biblical texts only addressing the lesson at hand at the very end.
