About this listen

Lucy White ends up in Farewell Square after a messy divorce. The other residents are anything but quiet, and they're as intrigued by Lucy as she is by them. As she's drawn into their midst, she realises that life can be kind as well as cruel.©2014 Audible, Inc. (P)2014 Audible, Inc. Romance

This is beautifully read by Francis Barber. Her reading of Colin in particular - an outgageous gay from Belfast - is a joy to listen to.
The book starts with rather a lot of characters being introduced, and I worried that I was going to get them muddled - was Lucy the runaway wife actually Laura, someone else's runway wife? You can't flip back a few pages so easily in an audiobook to find something you'd missed, but it all settled down and I had no trouble remembering who was who.
The core of the book is a terrible tragedy (I won't say what as you need to be led into it), but there is also marital betrayal, annorexia, friendship... I liked that she didn't settle for tying all the ends up neatly at the end - life ain't like that!
In summary - a good story, sad in places, laugh out loud in places, brilliantly read (oh for a voice like Ms Barber's), and easily held the attention. Well worth the purchase.
I've bought the paper book, but know I will enjoy reading it far more now I've heard it - and as someone reviewing the book on Amazon said, I'd love to see the pictures.

Beautifully read, funny and sad - a good listen
