As someone without much interest in tech, this book was a perfect ‘catch up’ on the history of tech and its social influence. Rushkoff was around for the early days of the internet when it was deeply counter cultural and connected with the psychedelic and early rave cultures. He traces the evolution of the internet, as well as the grand arcs of technology and the technological mindset more generally, through to the present day whilst retaining the radical humanity of the countercultural perspective. The book manages to unsparingly represent the severity and the weight of the issues at hand whilst always remaining fun, entertaining and inspiring authentic hope.

I looked forward to listening to this as I enjoyed reading Cyberia in the nineties. I quickly started looking forward to the end. I persevered. Now I’m looking forward to something else and am happier. I really shouldn’t have persevered. Maybe I’ve just become a grumpy old man. Or I’ve worked in IT for too long to find any different perspective or inpiration from this type of writing now. If I was younger though I may well have found this far more interesting.
