Survivor at Law is a gripping memoir of narcissistic abuse, coercive control, and a weaponized legal system, told by attorney Dovie King. She shares her unflinching story of trauma, betrayal, and the fight to reclaim her voice—offering insight and empowerment for anyone who has felt trapped, silenced, or overlooked.

A proud Latina, public interest lawyer, and educator, Dovie spent her career fighting for others while privately enduring a relationship that would test everything she believed about justice—culminating in many years of a legal battle and divorce that exposed the dark side of the system meant to protect her, but also sparked her transformation. This is not a story of blame. It’s a story of survival.

Calling someone names doesn’t tell me you healed from what you went through. It says you’re still bitter. I’ve always understood that lingering in the past governs your future. Lucky this is memoir because if it was self help I would say you can’t help others heal if you’re still bitter.

This isn’t to say that the testimony isn’t any less powerful. The fact that you choose a man that presented himself more than what he actually was and came out of the horror of it all is definitely moving and inspiring. Helping others out of similar circumstances is also wonderful. Inspiring especially for women who find themselves trapped as well. Wonderfully empowering.

This is was a powerful and emotional listen. This memoir goes far beyond a legal story - it’s a deeply personal account of surviving narcissistic abuse, coercive control, trauma, and the way those experiences can continue through systems that are supposed to offer protection.

What made this especially compelling to me was the author’s perspective as both an attorney and a survivor. That combination gave the story a different level of depth and made it especially eye-opening to see how manipulation and power can extend beyond relationships and into legal processes themselves. It really highlighted how difficult it can be to hold onto your own truth when you feel unheard, doubted, or forced to keep defending yourself.

Listening to this made the experience feel even more personal. The story is told with honesty and restraint, and I kept thinking about how much strength it must have taken to revisit and share experiences like these. Some parts were difficult and emotional to get through, but they felt important rather than overwhelming.

This isn’t an easy listen, but it’s a meaningful one. It left me with a greater understanding of emotional abuse, more empathy for survivors, and a lot of respect for the resilience it takes to reclaim your voice after being controlled, challenged, and misunderstood. It’s the kind of memoir that stays with you after it ends.

King presents with powerful prose her story as she works to pass the bar exam and become and attorney - one that would seem cut out for success, but her troubles begin when she forms a relationship with someone after she has begun a very successful career in the law and deals with a partner who becomes a violent and controlling sociopath. Strong, electric storytelling and a powerful reminder that we face massive hurdles even at the peak of success.

A powerful and evocative memoir

Gives a real look at abuse, control, and how the legal system can become part of the struggle. The narrator is engaging and keeps things interesting to listen to considering the topic. Its not always an easy listen, but it is an important one.
