At twenty-four, I left Canada with two suitcases, an engineering degree, and a quiet restlessness I couldn’t yet explain. What began as a master’s program in Barcelona became two years across Europe—France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Morocco, Greece, Switzerland—each place reshaping me in ways no classroom could.
In Naples, I learned passion can be overwhelming and beautiful. On rooftops near Mount Vesuvius, I faced the loneliness of becoming someone new. In Barcelona, I searched for “home” and found it within myself. In Toulouse, I learned what it means to feel truly foreign—and how resilience grows from discomfort.
Through difficult roommates, mentors, fleeting romances, and moments of doubt, I slowly shed the expectations that had shaped me.
This memoir is not just about travel. It is about transformation—learning to be alone without feeling empty, navigating difference and heartbreak, and growing through uncertainty. It explores the tension between freedom and belonging, and how growth is often uncomfortable before it becomes empowering.
Across degrees, apartments, and countless flights, I discovered that independence is quiet—built through small, defining choices.
Europe changed me. It stripped away performance and revealed authenticity. It taught me that endings are not failures, but beginnings.
This is a story of chasing adventure—and finding myself.
