Summary

STALKING SPIRITS IN THE RESTLESS CITY

Jinta's path is set: in one hundred and seventy years, he will face the Demon God and attempt to prevent a catastrophe. He has changed his name to Jinya and left his adopted home behind. It is the Bakumatsu period, and the city of Edo is bristling with unease. As a demon hunter in the city, Jinya encounters a warrior in search of his missing brother and finds demons hiding among the people. Among these meetings and partings, he seeks a reason to wield his blade.

So after the first book laid the groundwork for the premise of the series, we now pick up ten years later and follow Jinya through a number of cases, building the lore of the setting, and introducing us to new characters.

And it's great. Rather than an epic ongoing saga, it feels like a number of short stories staring the same main character. Put simply, it's very easy to listen to and enjoy. The stories are rich in Japanese history and folklore, and for anyone interested in these things the book is fantastic. If you were hoping to see Jinya doggedly tracking his sister, this isn't that. This is a much longer series taking place over hundreds of years.

But if you like spooky stories with easy to like characters and a melancholy mood, this is well worth a listen. I'm in it for the long haul at this point.

Dark yet very easy to listen to.
