About this listen

Surviving a world based on a System can be a nonstop struggle, rife with battle, blood, and badassery—now imagine surviving when you are the System . . .

Parker Wu’s life was cut short after a tragic encounter with a very large truck. But when one existence ended, another far more bizarre one began. Reincarnated and transported to the Continent—a world of swords and sorcery in which an all-powerful being known as the Eternal King reigns supreme—Parker is no longer a corporeal being. It seems the Continent has other plans for the late Earthling . . .

As it turns out, Parker is now a System, a non-player entity whose purpose is to help a player succeed. Parker’s been specially created to guide and try to protect a fellow human: the Godkiller Jerome Smith. It’s Jerome’s fate to find, fight, and destroy the Eternal King. Soon, the pair find themselves growing stronger (if not always smarter) and gathering a few allies along the way.

But as they progress, the dangers only get more lethal, and unfortunately, Jerome’s own brash personality may be his undoing. Unless Parker can get the Godkiller to stop treating everything like a game . . .

Woods is one of my favorite narrator and her performance is stellar as always, but the way the book is written doesn't quite work in audiobook form.

All dialog and internal thoughts are presented as a log and each line of dialog between characters is prefixed with their names which gets a bit tedious after a while.

Doesn't quite work.

Good performance, awful script.

Listening to the garbled error text is tedious, as well as the insane info dump on everything’s stats, modifiers and the like. If I have to hear another “UNKNOWN” I might tear my damn hair out.

Personally I wasn’t a fan of the change of tone when it came to addressing rarity, skills and such. It took me out of it every time. Dialogue between characters shouldn’t have that intonation IMO.

I think this would probably read better as a book rather than being an audio book - you could at least skip ahead comfortably or gloss over these issues.

Tedious

A boy and a girl, who never met before, die and get re-incarnated to a magical world. Boy gets a new body, girl gets to exist inside that same body as a support system.

What rubs me the wrong way is, that there is absolutely no pushback from the girl, as she goes on to happily serve and support this boy from the day 1. The entity that did this to her is not her enemy...

The story is told as if recorded in a written log, possibly from the girls perspective, as if she's meant to be the heroine of the story.

Really though, she's basically a slave chained to an oar on a galley, happily rowing a ship she does not control, while serving refreshments to the captain, singing kumbayah, and knowing that who chained her in is not her enemy.

No thank you.

thank you, but no.
