About this listen

Thirteen-year-old Al Mathews always considered himself ordinary. He didn’t believe in magic, monsters, or anything out of the ordinary—until the day he was attacked by a Pawn. Chased by a shadow and forced to defend himself from a fencer, Al's world is about to be turned upside down.

When his mom’s job moves them to a new town near the Mississippi River, Al hopes to leave his troubled past behind: no friends, constant bullying, and the label of "loser." But trouble seems to follow him wherever he goes.

Now, with a group of unlikely friends, Al finds himself caught in a battle between good and evil. As dark forces close in, Al must make life-or-death decisions, racing against time to save those he cares about—and uncover the answers he needs—before it's too late.

Tearing of the Veil is a gripping and imaginative start to The Al Mathews Adventures series, blending mystery, suspense, and a touch of the fantastical with real emotional depth. What I found particularly compelling was Al’s transformation—from a boy burdened by isolation and self-doubt to someone who begins to uncover his own strength in the face of danger. The narration brings Al’s voice to life with sincerity, making his journey feel both relatable and thrilling. The pacing is spot-on, keeping you hooked as the stakes rise and the shadows deepen.

What stood out most to me was the way the story balances supernatural elements with the very real struggles of adolescence. Al’s encounters with dark forces are intense, but it’s his bond with his new friends and his fight to protect those he loves that truly anchor the narrative. There’s a strong emotional core beneath the action, and it’s this blend of heart and suspense that makes the audiobook so memorable. A fantastic listen for anyone who enjoys coming-of-age tales with a mysterious twist.

This book pulled me in right from the start. Al Mathews is such a cool, relatable character, and the story has a great mix of action, mystery, and a bit of the supernatural. The pacing was solid, and I never felt lost or bored. Adriel Brandt's narration really brought the characters to life too—super engaging voice. Can’t wait to see where the next book takes things!

Great Start to a New Series!
