And as the story progresses, the female spies/assassins are forced to use their alter egos as courtesans to bring about the means they need to further their investigation. There is thus a lot more sex in this instalment, but the scenes are not distracting in any way (minor graphic, with no intention of being steamy), and they are depicted as one might expect for women in these situations.
I love the different POVs and what they bring to the table, such as how different they are to one another, but also how important each of them is in bringing this story forward.
Another great part of the Scions of the Black Lotus series, and I will most definitely continue reading the next!
Another fantastic part of this series!

We get another new PoV character in this one and she goes by the name of Wen. It's a much more somber point of view than before, with much of the on-page time given over to the mourning of a lost character. It's actually quite refreshing when most of the deaths have been pretty much glossed over, and gives a good emotional anchor.
There's a lot more sex in this one. A LOT more. But it's not graphic and it feels genuine. The main characters are posing as prostitutes and they don't lend much significance to the role they have to play, but make a note of the rare moments of intimacy that they find often between each other.
The 4th installment does feel a little episodic as it starts to fall into the trap of being resolved in the same way as the previous installments. Jie does some cool assassin stuff and gets the job done, Tian saves the day by putting all the clues together and figuring out the mystery. And the bad guy would have gotten away with it if not for those pesky kids! It's a pattern and not necessarily a bad one as it involves all the characters playing to their strengths, and the twists and turns are twisty and turny enough that they're not obvious. However, this one feels like the first episode in a 2 parter. The ending isn't as neat as the previous novellas. There's a lot of balls still in the air. Now I guess I'll just have to wait for book 5.
The narration, as before, is excellent.
3.5 stars.
The assassins get sexy in book 4
