About this listen

Tess of the D'Urbervilles is an early exercise in girl power. Tess spends her life being bullied by men and is pushed to the brink. A dramatic and tragic story, a listener cannot fail to be moved by Tess' story, which is sadly surprisingly familiar to many modern women in the world today.Public Domain (P)2007 CSA Telltapes Ltd Classics European Genre Fiction Literary Fiction Literary History & Criticism World Literature

Martin Shaw is one my favourite narrators. He doesn't disappoint in this version where his voice continually draws you in and keeps your attention. Lindsay Duncan beautifully captures Tess' vulnerability and warmness. She transports you with her performance of the accents. Shed a tear or two.

What did you like best about this story?

I struggle with the language used in many of the classic stories as I'm dyslexic. This was the first time, in my late teens, which I found one that I could understand. The dramatization of the charachters made it possible to follow the story whilst keeping true to the origional language.

Which character – as performed by Lindsay Duncan and Martin Shaw – was your favourite?

Tess is a fantastic charachter
