Summary
For over two decades, The Addictive Personality has helped people understand the process of addiction. Now, through this second edition, author Craig Nakken brings new depth and dimension to our understanding of how an individual becomes an addict. Going beyond the definition that limits dependency to the realm of alcohol and other drugs, Nakken uncovers the common denominator of all addiction and describes how the process is progressive.
Through research and practical experience, Nakken sheds new light on:
- Genetic factors tied to addiction
- Cultural influences on addictive behaviors
- The progressive nature of the disease
- Steps to a successful recovery
The author examines how addictions start, how society pushes people toward addiction, and what happens inside those who become addicted. This new edition will help anyone seeking a better understanding of the addictive process and its impact on our lives.

Also, and increasingly as the book progressed, there were some quotations from scripture and references to a higher power - given the AA 12 step association with the church, I found that an unhelpful and perhaps US biased side. I’ve no problem with a catchall reference to spirituality (if a person subscribes to that) and I can see that nurturing that side of oneself could be helpful in recovery but I’m uncomfortable being pushed towards a specifically Christian solution to what is a global mental health problem.
Overall though, the book was very useful (with those caveats). In order to avoid ending on what is a very depressing chapter detailing an assessment of the affects of addiction on families, especially young families, I’d have preferred a longer book or an immediately available part two that addressed the recovery process in much more depth and perhaps a more hopeful ending.
Very useful and informative

It is without doubt one of the best and easy to understand books I have listed to on this subject

and then the added nonsense about "spiritual journey", "devine meaning" and talk of the soul could have been easily replaced with "emotional health", "purpose or passion" and "sense of self"
Disappointing for a book I hoped was a scientific research book.
and it was all going so well...
