Three eminent chiropodists have been abducted and Holmes is called in to rescue them. His search for them involves Holmes exploring the world of amateur musicians, and, with Watson's help, uncovering the nefarious activities of those involved in the taking and selling of pornographic photographs. In this adventure he has to use his musical skills in addition to his well-known talents for obtaining data and reasoning from those data. He is ably assisted in his investigations by a visiting detective from Glasgow, Superintendent MacPhail, who shares many of Holmes's abilities.
