There is a lot to like in this book. The story of the famous Strad itself, its journey through many different hands, alterations, etc. I also enjoyed the sections on the musical periods.

Sadly, there is also a lot in this book which is irritating. The performance is actually beyond irritating. Why has nobody briefed Mr. Arnott on how to pronounce names? All but the English ones are without exception mispronounced. I have slowly come to accept that few English native speakers can pronounce Bach properly, but this was a true cringe-fest.

The story of Prieto himself is insightful in many ways, but he more or less gives us the entire content of a (sometimes very short) section in the heading. This makes actually listening to it superfluous.
