Summary

A gripping tale of espionage and murder in Elizabethan London.

London, 1590. Queen Elizabeth I's control over her kingdom is wavering. Amidst a tumultuous backdrop of Spanish plotters, Catholic heretics and foreign wars threatening the country's fragile stability, the body of a small boy is found in the City of London, with strange marks that no one can explain.

When idealistic physician Nicholas Shelby finds another body displaying the same marks only days later, he becomes convinced that a killer is at work, preying on the weak and destitute of London.

Determined to find out who is behind these terrible murders, Nicholas is joined in his investigations by Bianca, a mysterious tavern keeper. As more bodies are discovered, the pair find themselves caught in the middle of a sinister plot. With the killer still at large, and Bianca in terrible danger, Nicholas's choice seems impossible - to save Bianca, or save himself....

Really enjoyed this thriller. Story and historical information throughout the book was informative and fascinating

Excellent book

This was a very good book. My only problem was that the third person narrative went beyond a description of the situation and tried to enter the minds of both the main and the minor protagonists. I knew what Bianca was thinking, I knew how they were all feeling. I did not need the interruptions to my own imagination.

Don't tell me what they're thinking

Really enjoyed this book. Initially I really disliked the narrator & was afraid it would stop me from listening for long. But I settled to it quite quickly & am so glad I stuck with it. Having listened to this one I purchased the next two in the Jackdaw series and have listened to them straight off. That says how good I think they are. If it helps, I like this one best.

Wasn't sure at first but so glad I didn't give up

An excellent evocation of of some aspects of life in London the 16th century and an exciting and interesting mystery.

An enjoyable if rather macabre story

I'm sorry but I loathe the third person present format either write a film/stage play or write a book but don't try both. Having said that I'm sure its a good story, the historical accuracy is great and the narrator is good but speaks a little slowly so it sounds stilted at times. I just couldn't get past the third chapter, it annoyed me so much and, given its setting, I kept waiting for 'exit stage left, chased by a bear.'

I hate listening to pseudo film scripts
