About this listen

When Danny’s mother is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, he finds himself in a race against time to fulfil her wish for him… to find a soul mate.

Danny’s quest for love soon steers him into unfamiliar territory, and before long he’s introduced to a powerful new addiction: Online dating.

But has he taken a wrong turn? Because neither serial dater Harry, nor fetish scene enthusiast Ben, seem like the type one brings home to mother, and time is quickly running out.

Will Danny find the love of his life, or is his chance of meeting the perfect man slipping away one date at a time?

The App Trap is a bittersweet journey into the world of the London dating circuit. You will laugh, you will cry, and you may never swipe again.

I know Dan Calley as a narrator and was curious about this story because the basic idea intrigued me. In short, unfortunately, the story didn't win me over. There were several reasons for this. It's humorous, but I found some of the humor a little forced and contrived.
I also felt that the story lacked a common thread; it seemed to me to be a series of events strung together. And you should be aware that this is not a love story and that the relationship is portrayed as rather incidental. The ending is also a matter of taste and unfortunately wasn't to my liking.
I'm always happy to discover new authors, and I guess this book just wasn't for me.

I thought Dan Calley was an excellent narrator; he's very good at reading audiobooks. That's why I've decided to stick with Dan Calley as my narrator.

The story wasn't to my taste.

I love Dan Calley as a narrator, and was thrilled to hear him making the leap to writing. I haven’t listened to The Player’s Lounge yet, but it’s on my wish list. This audio came up first and I dove in with very few expectations. I did note his warning that this isn’t a traditional romance. I was totally down for that.

What I didn’t expect was a quirky, irreverent, and joyous journey through the London dating life.

First, I’m not a big city girl. London would completely overwhelm me.

Second, I’m not a child of the Internet. Although single, I’ve never used a dating app. I tried speed dating once – what a disaster that was.

Third, I’m not adventurous. See above for the one time I stepped out of my comfort zone.

Danny, on the other hand, is hugely adventurous. And happy to sign up for every dating app available for single gay guys in London. All this while he’s worried about his mom who’s sick. He thinks if he can find ‘the one’ then maybe that will reassure her that he’ll be okay.

Well, to say he gets into some interesting scenarios is an understatement. Firstly – how does everyone in London know everyone else? Seems Danny’s always running into someone he’s previously been on a date with or swiped right on or whatever the kids say these days.

How is one guy expected to keep track of all the Toms, Harrys, and Dicks out there? Seriously – how many gay guys named Harry are on these apps?

I laughed, I literally cried (didn’t see that coming, even though I should have), and I truly enjoyed my time in the London dating scene.

Glad Danny got his happy ending.

Narrator Dan was fantastic. I’ve loved everything he’s ever done and will always grab anything he’s narrated. Loved this one.

Didn’t see this lovely treat coming

I enjoyed the humorously astringent look into the world of dating apps and was glad to see the two main characters find each other for good at the end, but I'd have liked more time with the two of them exclusively together. I thought the ending was too realistic for the tone of the rest of the book. Calley has potential with m/m stories and I look forward to seeing how he develops as a storyteller. I really enjoyed getting to hear the author narrate his own book. He knew the characters so well and did a great job bringing them to life.

Story: The whole non - romance premise of the story had me intrigued, but I must say it didn't work for me at all. The story is chaotic and has a "trying too hard" vibe on the humor front. It's almost a random collection of short encounters and I could not connect to the characters at all.
It's great to see new names and people trying themselves in new roles, but I'll stick to Dan as a narrator for now.
Narration: Good job on the audio front, but that's not a surprise.

Audiobook - I loved the narration, excellent different voices.
Big trigger warning for the final chapter.
Sadly not really my kind of story, too many cringe situations. The final sad scene would have fit better if Danny had had a more believable relationship with Harry a little earlier. It was a well written scene, though, which wrapped the story up completely.
