Summary

For more than 50 years Michael Green's The Art of Coarse Acting has been essential reading for anyone with a passion for theatre, both amateurs and professionals alike. This acerbic yet affectionate work remains one of the funniest books about acting ever written.

It's a "[W]ickedly irreverent" (The Stage) exposé which ridicules pretentiousness, pokes fun at incompetence and disaster and generally lays bare life backstage. Even after all this time it remains true that however much the theatre may change, coarse actors don't. No single definition fits all of them, but nobody has come up with one to better the original, "One who can remember the lines but not the order in which they come."

Michael Green recorded this unabridged audio version of his book a few years ago. It was archived unreleased and is only now available, in 2020, sadly after his death. What a fitting memorial it is to the "[M]aster humourist" as Quentin Letts called him in the Daily Mail, to have this glorious book brilliantly performed by the author himself.

The 50th Anniversary Edition of the printed book is published by Samuel French.

An RBA production, produced by Anne Rosenfeld.

Original music by Sam Park.
