Bread, cash, dosh, dough, loot: Call it what you like, it matters. To Christians, love of it is the root of all evil. To generals, it's the sinews of war. To revolutionaries, it's the chains of labour. But in The Ascent of Money, Niall Ferguson shows that finance is in fact the foundation of human progress. What's more, he reveals financial history as the essential back-story behind all history.©2008 Niall Ferguson (P)2009 WF Howes Ltd Economic History Economics World Money Capitalism Banking Global Financial Crisis War Socialism US Economy Taxation Great Recession

A very well written and researched book, just a little too dry for me. And written in 2009, also a little out of date.

Decent book but my god - this narrator needs to stop doing his kooky accents. His American one he does when quoting an American is some tongue in cheek joke, done all smarmy and stupid. So cringe inducing. I’m glad he didn’t do one for the Chinese he quoted.

Annoying accents

The wealth of knowledge the author displays is astounding but as you would expect from a book on finance, the necessary details can make it less riveting at times.

Massively informative if a little dry at times
