'It takes a lot of time to be a genius. You have to sit around so much, doing nothing, really doing nothing.'

A quasi-memoir written from the perspective of Gertrude Stein's lifelong partner, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas is a lively, playful account of the literary giant's vibrant life in the early twentieth century.

Captivating and characteristically self-assured, this glittering memoir recounts Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas's artistically rich life in Paris. Including a candid look into their relationship as a couple, famous gatherings at their fashionable home of 27 rue de Fleurus, meetings with artists like Picasso and Matisse, Stein's views on modern art and literature, and so much more, this memoir – although written from Toklas's perspective – offers an intimate insight into Stein's extraordinary life and career. Ironic, witty and brimming with vivid portraits of some of the twentieth century's most iconic cultural figureheads, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas remains a modernist masterpiece. This audiobook edition is expertly read by Laurel Lefkow.

Gertrude Stein (1874 – 1946) was an American novelist, playwright and poet. Moving to Paris in 1903, Stein was famed for hosting a literary salon, where leading figures of the modernist movement would congregate. Her works were bestsellers at the time of publication, and they remain widely read today.
