About this listen

'DIABOLICALLY DELIGHTFUL' Tananarive Due, author of The Reformatory
'OLD-SCHOOL HORROR' Stephen King on Boys in the Valley

Burgeoning with dark humour, violence and mystery, The Autumn Springs Retirement Home Massacre is a blood-soaked slasher sure to keep listeners flinching, laughing, and guessing until the very end.

Rose DuBois is not your average final girl.

Rose is in her late 70s, living out her golden years at the Autumn Springs Retirement Home.

When one of her friends dies alone in her apartment, Rose isn't too concerned. Accidents happen, especially at this age!

Then another resident drops dead. And another. With bodies stacking up, Rose can't help but wonder: are these accidents? Old age? Or something far more sinister?

Together with her best friend Miller, Rose begins to investigate. The further she digs, the more convinced she becomes: there's a killer on the loose at Autumn Springs, and if she isn't careful, Rose may be their next victim.

'Fracassi blends the true-life horror of aging and society's scorn for the elderly with an original slasher premise and reimagined Final Girl. The question isn't who will die at the Autumn Springs Retirement Home - but who will survive? Diabolically delightful' Tananarive Due, author of The Reformatory

'Rose isn't your average final girl. She's a woman and a survivor who you'll cheer for every step of the way in this smart, fast-paced slasher' Erika T. Wurth, author of White Horse and The Haunting of Room 904

'A wholly original slasher novel with a uniquely strong and vulnerable heroine...Fans of the genre should put this on their must-read list' Christina Henry, author of Alice and The Place Where They Buried Your Heart

This book is a fresh twist on old-school horror. Rose DuBois, our final girl, is already a favorite of mine, Rose and her friends show that old age in a retirement home isn’t just about relaxing in your golden years—it’s about surviving a killer showdown. 🔪

‘Checking out’ takes on a whole new meaning.

Living out her golden years at the Autumn Springs Retirement Home, Rose DuBois and her friend Miller don't find the news of the death of one of their fellow residents alarming, a bit suspicious sure, but alarming no and even the second death doesn’t ruffle too many feathers. But as the body count slowly rises Rose and Miller start to question if these deaths truly are accidents or if something far more sinister is happening and if its the latter can they convince anyone to take their concerns/theories seriously enough before another body is found?

It feels wrong to say that I truly enjoyed this listen given its at times graphic content surrounding vulnerable elderly people being murdered... and yet I did.

This book delivers classic slasher vibes but it is also more in its storytelling. It features great characters who are vibrant and young at heart despite their aging bodies, a unique retirement community setting, a mystery to solve, dark humor, and a cast of elderly characters who despite their overall vulnerability are anything but frail. This book is a commentary on ageing and how society/close family can treat us in our golden years. About how we can stop being fully seen by those around us and how lonely and isolating that can be. It also has very slight paranormal elements to it which were fun.

The reason this doesn't reach top marks for me is because the reveal of whodunit wasn't a surprise to me. I had a one theory early on and that turned out to be correct... at one point in the story I did wonder about another character, I won't say who here for spoiler reasons but had the author gone down that route it could've been interesting. My heart ached for Rose and all she and her friends went through but her characters strength shone through right to the end.

This was a great listen, January LaVoy does an impeccable job at giving each character their own distinctive persona without it feeling overdone. A fantastic introduction to this new to me author. Check content and TWs if necessary.

"𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒉𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒔𝒂𝒌𝒆, 𝒏𝒐 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒖𝒔. 𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒔, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚'𝒅 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒅𝒂𝒎𝒏 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒔. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒓𝒂𝒛𝒚 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒖𝒓𝒕 𝒂 𝒃𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒉 𝒐𝒇 𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒔."

“But you know what? Sometimes things don't work out. The truth is, you don't always know what someone will do or how they'll react. You can hope for a certain outcome, sure. Of course. You set things up like a chessboard and watch it play out, move by move, waiting to fuck that queen.”

What a fantastic book. Well written & brilliant character development. Has it all, goes from nail biting who-done- it to heartbreakingly moving throughout the story. It would make a great film as long as they stay faithful to the book. I can't recommend it highly enough. Narrator does a fantastic job, too.

Best book I've read/listened to in a while.

3 stars might seem not great. But actually I quite enjoyed this overall. One of the stronger 2025 horror novels so far.

Decent slasher
