When Tralane, an itinerant bard, was captured by the dread Sorcerer King, his only hope lay in stealing the Eye of Wyden. With that powerful amulet, he was able to escape to another variant world.

But he could not so easily escape the destiny that seemed to pursue him. As he fled from world to world, each seemed to offer only greater misery and danger. And now he was stalked by the mocking figure of the Jade Warrior, a mysterious creature who waited patiently for his failure or death.

The final world was that of the Worm-God Wyden, from whom the Eye had been ripped, and the Man of a Thousand Faces, who sought to trap him into an eternity of futile degradation. In the end, Tralane was forced to flee once more - back to face himself and his unknown beginnings.

This is an odd little gem Crossroad Press has brought to Audio. I was expecting something in the Dark Fantasy vein given Crossroad deals mostly in horror. And while there's a lot of dark things in this it's not in the subgenre we now call dark fantasy.
It's a fairly imaginative story in which the young bard's problems, both external and internal, follow him across many worlds. It can feel claustrophobic at times. But it builds to an impressive climax and a resolution that ties things together nicely. Proving you don't need 3000 words to make a grand story. You just need ideas that have impact.

There's not much sword fighting and I don't think there's any gore. But it's not quite a children's story either. This book is sombre, but it's also an adventure, and it wants you to contemplate some ideas.
