About this listen

A tough-as-leather football player. A happy-go-lucky historian. It’s love against all odds in a warm and emotional romance about found family, friendship, and the restorative powers of the heart.

Former Dallas football player Burke Barrett is weathering a lot of changes. He’s retired from football. He’s mourning the loss of his best friend. And now he’s been bequeathed a dilapidated house in northern Michigan he doesn’t want. To his surprise it comes with a long-legged, blindly optimistic renovation manager with big ideas for Burke’s inheritance. She’s passionate, irritating, and irresistible.

Restoration expert Charlotte Cunningham is used to rough exteriors. This surly client, with his stubbled jaw, towering physique, and inflexible attitude, is worth smoothing over. The attraction sizzles, and a proposal is in order: a romantic tryst to relieve the tension. No strings attached. A safe bet for both of them since Burke is prepared to renovate, sell, and move on.

A pet project with an end date. Does that go for love too? Burke must decide what he really wants and what he’s willing to risk. He should know by now that the best-laid plans can change in a heartbeat.

Enjoyed listening to Burke and Charlotte story. Issues around grief and guilt played out in this story as well as healing. Great narrators too

On paper this has what usually makes a great read for me but there was a definite imbalance between the tropes used to build the story and the chemistry of the MCs. Their interactions felt forced, I felt no real connection between them, there wasn't much plot or character development as even by the end of the book I didn't feel like I knew anything real about either Burke or Charlotte. Their characters felt like cardboard cutouts of what they were meant to be and the overall theme of grief in the story instead of adding emotional impact just overshadowed every aspect of the book and actually took away the chance for the romance to flourish in my opinion.

Burke (yes really that's the MMCs name... can you imagine trying to scream that in a passionate moment with a straight face because I can't) needs therapy and both he & Charlotte need to work on their communication. Unfortunately this is yet another book this month that has fallen flat for me and even having the talented Vanessa Edwin & Connor Crais narrating couldn't save it for me. Their perfomances were wonderful as always but the story itself I found lacking. 🌶
