About this listen

DON'T MISS THE SERIES NOW STREAMING ON APPLE TV+

The New York Times bestselling author of My Sunshine Away returns with a gripping and heartfelt novel about a mysterious machine that upends a small Louisiana town, asking us all to wonder if who we truly are is who we truly could be.

What would you do if you knew your life's potential? That's the question facing the residents of Deerfield, Louisiana, when the DNAMIX machine appears in their local grocery store. It's nothing to look at, really—it resembles a plain photo booth. But its promise is amazing: With just a quick swab of your cheek and two dollars, the device claims to use the science of DNA to tell you your life's potential. With enough credibility to make the townspeople curious, soon the former teachers, nurses, and shopkeepers of Deerfield are abruptly changing course to pursue their destinies as magicians, cowboys, and athletes—including the novel's main characters, Douglas Hubbard and his wife, Cherilyn, who both believed they were perfectly happy until they realized they could dream for more....

Written with linguistic grace and a sense of wonder, The Big Door Prize sparkles with keen observations about what it might mean to stay true to oneself while honoring the bonds of marriage, friendship, and community, and how the glimmer of possibility can pull these bonds apart, bring them back together, and make second chances possible, even under the strangest of circumstances.

The book is vastly different from the tv-series, which is good. The main plot isn’t as intriguing, but the idea of a life potential and how it would affect one-self is good.

Interesting story

I watched the TV series and when I found out it was cancelled I downloaded the audio book to see how it would have ended. The book is quite different to the TV show and I think the adaption was heading a different way with the ending than the book did. I found the book a bit sluggish and the resolution to the story happened so fast I missed it and ended up asking ChatGPT to explain the ending to me.

A little disappointing

I came for the TV show, to get answers following Apple TV's cancellation. Instead, I had a different story which was mysterious and enjoyable, and with a good ending.

A good ending

I started to watch the tv series after it had apparently had great reviews, only to find it had been cancelled! The series had quite a bit of humour in it, following the lives of people affected by the suggestion of their best future selves received on a card from a mysterious machine called Morpho.
I thought I’d read the book as I was intrigued by the story and wanted to know the ending!
What a let down.
The series was almost nothing like the book. The main story is almost hidden and incredibly dark but almost swept away at the end! There is no humour in the book.
I’m amazed it was picked up and someone saw the possibility of a script in it!
My recommendation would be to try a different book!

Total nothingness
