Who are we? Where did we come from?

These aren’t flippant questions, in the least. For millennia, poets, artists, philosophers, politicians, historians, scientists, and spiritual leaders have grappled with them because their answers could hold the key to explaining the complexities of human existence.

Creating a coherent picture of our earliest relatives can be a challenging undertaking. Even with recent scientific developments and archaeological discoveries, there’s still a lot we don’t know about the evolution of the human species. Crucial pieces of the puzzle are still missing, and every new discovery—fossil or otherwise—has the potential to rewrite our understanding of our own family tree.

In 10 riveting episodes, paleoanthropologist Elen Feuerriegel takes you on an unrivaled tour of the human fossil record in search of the biological and behavioral underpinnings of our very “humanness”. Big Mysteries of Human Evolution draws on current research to highlight (and maybe even help solve) these and other enduring mysteries about our closest ancestors: how the first bipeds took their first steps, how tools gave humans a cutting edge over other species, how early social groups (and diets) were structured, and how modern humans evolved to become the dominant species on the planet.

Very easy to listen to. The narrator has an easy-going style without dipping into ‘hey, kids isn’t science cool?’

Fascinating Exploration of our evolution.

Poor presentation made following difficult. The lecturer spoke so quickly and needs to use the odd full stop.

Didn’t enjoy this series

I listened to this following hearing Steve Brusattes "The Rise and Reign of the Mammals" (and before that his "The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs.) Undoubtedly this series of lectures are a logical extension of the subject of evolution looking at our forebears which are accessible and informative which I commend to others who, like myself, are learning about this fascinating issue.

Very accessible and recommended

Ten compelling and authoritative lectures on human evolution. Dr Feuerriegel is an Australian paleoanthropologist researcher at the University of Washington. Here she presents the significant hominid finds from the time we diverged from the chimpanzee line and reviews many of the hypotheses and conjectures about them in an even handed and persuasive way. I was utterly transfixed.

This is a small 'tour-de-force' of the history of our species. A concise, very informative, cruise into palaeoarchaeology - from someone who has been there: deep inside ancient narrow dark caves discovering previously unknown human ancestors.

The author / narrator does speak much too quickly, but this problem can be easily overcome by playing the audio at 0.9x speed or lower.
