There is a story you probably know well. A story told at Christmas. A story of stables and stars. There is, though, a part of the tale that has not been told. The story of the women, that Mary had a midwife and her name was Salome.

Salome learnt from her mother and grandmothers before how to help pregnancy, turn babies and support women through the rite of passage that is birth. One birth she attends seems ordinary...it is in fact nothing but.

Learn about a time when women would support other women during birth. Skills passed down from mothers and grandmothers, a few of whom would take the role of the wise woman, the birthkeeper for a village. There for pregnancy, birth and death. Salome opens up a secret world of women, birth and the women forgotten from one of the most famous stories.

Utterly fascinating and heart-warming, especially at Christmas time. A brilliant book for women which I cannot rate highly enough.

Spell-binding story

A beguiling story with clear and articulate narration by the author of The Birthkeeper of Bethlehem, Bridget Supple. It is told from the perspective of Salome, the midwife of Mary who comes from a line of women who were experts in the skill of looking after mothers and bringing babies into the world.
This book is like a spin-off to the nativity story and elaborates on that theme with wonderful character studies of people whose names may be familiar with from the bible. It focusses on the pregnancy of Mary and the birth including many facts about ancient methods and traditions associated with birthing. Some were very different from today (give me a water birth over a birthing stone any day!) but some we still see such as the ancient herbs like Clary Sage. For anyone interested in the wonder of birth, the nativity story (or both!) this is a great listen.

Enchanting story with accouchement facts
