About this listen

War dragons.

Fearsome raiders.

A daemonic warlord on the rise.

When the citizens of Black Keep see ships on the horizon, terror takes them because they know who is coming: for generations, the keep has been raided by the fearsome clanspeople of Tjakorsha. Saddling their war dragons, Black Keep's warriors rush to defend their home only to discover that the clanspeople have not come to pillage at all. Driven from their own land by a daemonic despot who prophesises the end of the world, the raiders come in search of a new home....

Meanwhile the wider continent of Narida is lurching toward war. Black Keep is about to be caught in the crossfire - if only its new mismatched society can survive.

The start of an unmissable fantasy series.

The Black Coast is the first fantasy novel from critically acclaimed Games Workshop/Warhammer 40k author Mike Brooks. Look out for the sequel: The Splinter King.

The Black Coast is a fine balance of awesome epic fantasy shenanigans and thoughtful worldbuilding with a big heart and a hopeful outlook. The audiobook is well read and the story is the kind of multi-threaded roller-coaster ride we have come to expect from big-screen fantasy but without the thread of despair that marrs a lot of Grimdark, this felt unlike that in a really enjoyable way. Grim in places, perhaps, but never entirely dark.

Excellent epic fantasy

A refreshing take on the fantasy genre with a focus on societies clashing in the home rather than the battlefield. primarily a tale of 2 cultures trying to forge a path forward together on a hostile world, with stories of the sister of a good king , a young thief and the minion of a undead demon interwoven. With writing styles used to emphasise the difference you feel the culture clash of patriarchal Dino riding gay supporting samurai Vs non patriarchal unstratified homophobic Viking Aztecs, as they strive to be better to their people and unified against the threats looming on the horizon.
