Summary

From acclaimed author and dramatist Peter May comes the Barry award-winning The Blackhouse, the first book in the Lewis Trilogy--a riveting mystery series set on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides.

When a grisly murder occurs on the Isle of Lewis that bears similarities to a brutal killing on the mainland, Edinburgh detective and native islander Fin Macleod is dispatched to the Outer Hebrides to investigate, embarking at the same time on a voyage into his own troubled past.

As Fin reconnects with the people and places of his tortured childhood, the desolate but beautiful island and its ancient customs once again begin to assert their grip on his psyche. Every step toward solving the case brings Fin closer to a dangerous confrontation with the dark events of the past that shaped--and nearly destroyed--his life.

Western France - now May's own stamping ground - is as much a character in the book as the Hebrides were in his formidable Isle of Lewis sequence
Peter May is a writer I'd follow to the ends of the earth
Instantly struck by the beauty of the descriptions of the wild island terrain as well as by the roundedness and complexity of the characterisations
May's novels are strong on place and the wounds left by old relationships
Will have the reader relishing every tendency of description and characterization (Barry Forshaw)
Dark, exciting and atmospheric
Powerful and authentic
Fast, exciting ... an entertaining read that will also give food for thought

A story steeped in historic traditions on the Isle of Lewis but two modern murders. Read as they get her the details, the stories and lines of people on the island to solve the murder. Excellent story, wonderfully written would recommend

Although a short book, this book is the perfect introduction to the three Lewis books written by Peter May. The narration is first class throughout the series and in this book the characters are nicely put into place, as well as having some glimpses into life as it was in the Outer Hebridees and as it is today.

An excellent read, excellent narration

Brilliantly read just like the other books in the Peter May collection. Peter Forbes brings the characters to life with the change of his voice. The story keeps you gripped, wanting to find the answers but keeps you guessing till the end.

Love Peter May and Peter Forbes
