Oh dear! Have just finished the Botanist's daughter and am left with a feeling of disappointment. The story had charm and unlike some other reviewers, I found it interesting and engaging. But, and it's a big BUT the narrator's accents were so appalling that I moved from finding them amusing, to irritating and finally unbearable. The Cornish accent is a mixture of Irish, Caribbean with a dose of Dick Van Dyke cockney. The London Kew Garden botanist 'Ed' is clearly based on Hugh Grant from Four Weddings and a Funeral, with his ever so British expletives, his 'floppy fringe' and his habit of calling Anna by her surname 'Jenkins'. Add to this my suspicion that the author has based her impression of Cornwall from watching the BBC's 'Poldark' and I was left with a frustration that a sweet story I actually enjoyed, had been hijacked by bad accents and clichés.

Had potential but ruined by terrible narration

it's a lovely story full of surprises but could have been a little more detailed and thought through. the narrator's voice was nice but attempts for accents were spoiling it a little.

lovely summer reading

I was so disappointed in this book. Feel embarrassed to face my bookclub as this book was suggested by me! I ended up to speeding it up and only half listening at the end. I also found the narrator irritating and her attempt at accents and also pronunciation was laughable. Full of clichés, far fetched, too much jumping around. No character development, all rather predictable. It certainly put me off reading any more books by the author. It seemed like she had not done enough research or perhaps is not well travelled/educated.

Poor narration really spoiled it for me

The book was beautifully written, however the voice of the narrator was rather annoying. She made everyone sound so old and weird. I didn’t like it. Will definitely purchase this book to add into my home library.

Voice intonation not good
